In an effort to provide Harris County citizens with more
efficient and effective service, Sheriff Tommy Thomas opened a
new patrol district, District V. in September, 2004. Taking
portions of what had been Districts I and IV, and adding
additional deputies, District V covers the northwestern
portions of the County. With the explosive growth in this
area, Sheriff Thomas believes creating District V provides
faster, more localized service to the citizens, and will save
taxpayers' dollars in the long run. In addition to the patrol
deputies and the crime analyst the District V Sub-Station
provides office space for the BARS unit as well as the
detectives for this area and is open to the public from 8:00
a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Harris County Sheriff’s Junior Mounted Posse
District V is very proud to have the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Junior Mounted Posse headquarters at its location. This is a non-profit youth equestrian organization made up of members ranging in age 6 to 18. It is the oldest youth equestrian riding drill team in the State of Texas originating in 1951 under Sheriff C. V. “Buster” Kern. Sheriff Tommy Thomas has continued the tradition which promotes and encourages the training of our children not only in the art of horsemanship, but in the varied art of citizenship, sportsmanship and every day living.
They practice intricate drills to perform in a variety of different events including parades, sporting events, and rodeos. One of the yearly highlights is a series of relay rides (pony express) delivering proclamations from our city and county officials to the dignitaries of numerous communities inviting these officials to the Annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
If you know of anyone interested in joining, please contact Sgt. Al Blendermann or Warren Conner at 281-290-2100. Also please visit the web page at http://www.hcjrposse.org/
Waller ISD
For the past eight years, Waller ISD has contracted with the Harris County Sheriff Office to have deputies serve as School Resource Officers (SRO). Since then the District has been recognized by the Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program as the safest school district in Harris County largely because of the work of the School Resource Officers.
The School Resource Officers serve as law-enforcement officers, law-related counselors, and law-related presenters. As law-enforcement officers, their primary goal is to keep the peace and make appropriate reports and arrests; as law-related counselors, they provide resource guidance to students, parents, teachers, and staff while also serving as a link to support services both inside and outside the schools; and as law-related presenters, they share special law enforcement expertise through student and staff presentations. They also serve as positive role models for students on campus and at extracurricular activities.
