Though its responsibilities are many, as the name suggests
the number one priority of the Homicide Division is the
successful and timely investigation of homicides. 19 investigators,
3 sergeants, one lieutenant and three clerks are assigned to the unit.
The investigators are divided into 3 squads. The scene
squads work all the new or "fresh" cases received by the unit
and are on nighttime callout for a week at a time. The cold case
squad has 2 investigators and they work unsolved homicide cases that
are three years old or older. Cold case reports directly to the lieutenant.
All investigators assigned to Homicide are selected on the basis of
work ethic, investigative experience and skill, police experience
and an expressed desire to work homicide cases.
In addition to the homicide squads, there are 8 detectives and 1
sergeant assigned to assaults. This unit investigates assault
cases where the victim did not suffer life-threatening injuries.
Since it's inception the cold case squad has cleared twenty-two
murder cases and five capital murder cases with charges filed.
In addition to reviewing and investigating old Harris County
cases, this squad spends many hours assisting out of county
agencies with their new and old cases. They are also available
to assist any in county agencies.
